John isn't just a necromancer, he is the necromancer (the top rated one on Twitch, for that matter!). That said, he is 100% nerfed into the ground no longer (mostly) nerfed here... but he's still (other than during certain events) restricted to consent on what he can do directly to your body. He can, however, sense and manipulate thanergy (death energy) as well as thalergy (life energy)...
Which is where you come in!
There's really three questions I'm going to ask re: your character, as per mod decision -
1. Would you consider your character, outside of being on the Barge, to be undead/resurrected or otherwise have a strange situation regarding mortality going on?
2. If you do, which kind of energy (thalergy or thanergy) do you think your character would produce? [PLEASE note it can be a mix, as most of the humans in canon are, but one they've been raised on thanergic planets (so who knows) and two, what with cells constantly dying and being regenerated and everything but I figure given the Barge puts people in stasis... it's probably not quite the same].
and
3. Do you consent to John being able to sense your character's energy?
3b. Do you consent to John being able to sense if your character has died recently? (Per the mods, anyone deathtolling will have a 'dollop' of thanergy to pick up on)
Three notes while making your decision:
PLEASE NOTE
I'd also appreciate if you could provide, if John can sense your energy:
ETA: As John has had his powers (largely) unlocked, we're adding one more option. SPECIFICALLY, if John is given consent in play, I'd love to have it recorded here so I have a record. Things John can do with consent include:
☠❤️☠Yes, John can use his power on my character's body/spirit.
If you have any other questions, concerns, issues, thoughts, etc? Feel free to drop 'em here. Thanks!

Three notes while making your decision:
- John can tell a lot of things by being able to read your energy, mostly to do with one's health or physical status. So picking up on heartbeat upticks, gland and lymphatic secretions, is information he'd have and he 100% knows how to read things things because he's a myriad-years-old master necromancer. So the best comparison I can make is to him being a vampire or werewolf and using his supersenses to 'read' your character with this information.
- He cannot at this point (and for a good long time as far as I'm concerned) utilize this energy for doing anything without your character's consent. His power stops where your character starts unless your character gives consent in the moment. He can heal literally anything no matter how severe if given that consent. With the obvious flipside.
- ...he can, however, get high off your character's death. Sorry.
PLEASE NOTE
- I will ask any time I intend to sense things from your character
- I will ask specifically what you'd like him to pick up on that score
- if at the time you do not want him to notice something, I will honor that request regardless of what's here
- I view all powers as narrative tools so I'm way more interested in discussing this stuff than I am in being 'accurate' to the book. If we want things to be wonky or to play with these concepts, I am up for using 'Barge weirdness' to make it work. Just let me know.
- These answers can be changed at any time.

- cure any disease
- grow back limbs
- change your body to make you harder, better, faster, stronger
- potentially move your spirit from your body and back
- ...but also every horrifying body horror thing you could ever imagine including literally exploding you from the inside out

Any medical oddities of note: idk where do we even start.
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns: regeneration! weird physiology! kinda sorta immortal! very very interested
My character gives off thanergy (death energy)/thalergy (life energy):
I feel like it might be both: regeneration might be both of them combined into a useful waveform.
also she literally uses regeneration mojo to work the werewolf change so that will also be interesting
can't wait

Any medical oddities of note: Using alien tech to heal, erase scars perhaps.
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns: Maybe the biggest thing relevant to John's powers is Norton's 63 years in the Rift being dead-ish on Flight 405. The situation is described in canon as a rapid decomposition to a skeleton, then after a few minutes, the decomposition unwinds back to normal, and then rinse/repeat endlessly. So he's not undead or resurrected exactly, but his body did spend a big chunk of time being dead. (Technically he's spent about twice as many years dead than alive.)
I'm very canon blind, but on account of the whole Flight 405 situation above, I'm thinking he might give off thanergy more than thalergy? If I'm interpreting it wrong, or if you have other ideas that'd fit canon, definitely let me know. I'm open to anything!
ETA
☠❤️☠Yes, John can use his power on my character's body/spirit.
Any notes?: ICly, Norton would not handle it well if his body were body horrored or memory meddled with. He'd find all the other stuff pretty neat. OOCly, I'm down for anything with plotting.

Any medical oddities of note: So far he has not died at home or here.
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns: Idk if being AROUND a lot of death - specifically a lot of violent murder - affects his energy, but basically I am down for whatever works for you.
I expect he would give off thalergy.

Any medical oddities of note: Necromancer, currently has 2 strains of lycanthropy, Human Servant, it's likely she isn't aging
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns: Powerful amateur, can "eat" other people's powers and replicate them temporarily and/or permanently. In general yes let's plot some shit.
My character gives off thanergy (death energy)/thalergy (life energy) Both. I'd say she definitely gives off both.

Any medical oddities of note: Archer is currently dead and has been dead for a looooong time. He’s a ghost/spirit whose body isn’t made of flesh and blood. All magic, baby.
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns: idk he self-heals, can turn into a spirit form (which makes him invisible to most people, though John could see him if you want), etc.
My character gives off lots of thanergy (death energy). Of course.
Wip, don’t respond so I can edit
Any medical oddities of note: Extra organ in the brain. Utter lack of internal proprioception. Once had an arrow through her shoulder, with appropriate bone scarring. Someone also cut open her skull and then healed it very rapidly and a bit haphazardly.
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns: Thinker died violently 31 years ago and her ‘administrator,’ or the shard of her being in charge of controlling/regulating all other parts, was welded first to Daniel Hebert (never triggered) and then to Taylor. Thinker and Warrior (Thinker's other half, not present but has touched T) together have consumed many pluralities of worlds, using the lives and deaths therein to test out adaptations they may want for themselves.
Taylor gives off mixed signals. The swarm is always a riot of life and death. Hundreds of thousands of births and deaths every moment.
Thinker gives off thanergy.

☠☠☠Yes, John can sense my character's energy when they've died recently and in general. I'm also interested in exploring these concepts or playing with his power.
Any medical oddities of note: Yunlan has a whole weird Thing going on involving dark energy and sacrifice. In short: Normal human energy in his world is "light energy," whereas the underworld has a type of power called "dark energy," which is used by aliens who have adapted to the underworld environment and which is actively dangerous and corrosive to humans. Yunlan's normal light energy is seriously corrupted by exposure to dark energy; he went blind for a period of time as a result (and we see another human being who used a similar artifact more extensively disintegrate from the dark energy exposure.)
He can see again because Shen Wei shared his own natural dark energy, which is replacing and repairing the damage on an ongoing basis.
He also sacrificed himself to an ancient artifact that runs by focusing power through a soul, putting that soul in eternal burning torment and leaving its former body dead, and was brought to the barge after spending some time being tormented as the "wick" of that artifact. So he's arguably not only undead but the undead focus of a great deal of death-derived power.
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns: (GESTURES TO THE ABOVE) I don't even know what that'll look like to John, but I have the strong feeling he might want to, like, yank Yunlan aside and shake him down for descriptions of ancient death tech.
My character gives off thanergy (death energy)
and is going to be unhappy to find that out.Cho Gonou
☠☠☠Yes, John can sense my character's energy when they've died recently and in general. I'm also interested in exploring these concepts or playing with his power.
Any medical oddities of note: Normal-ass human being transformed into a demon by exposure to the blood of a thousand demons. I'd argue that this is not actually a death-driven transformation because we do see that the blood of the thousandth demon finalized the transformation even though it was from a superficial cut on his hand, but I'm open to other interpretations wrt thanergy vs thalergy in the process!
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns: Demons in Gonou's world do have access to significantly more power and supernatural abilities compared to humans, so he might appear to have an unusually large amount of life energy?
My character gives off thalergy.

Any medical oddities of note: He's a Leprechaun, so he falls somewhere between human and as powerful/alien as many on the Barge are. He still feels pain, bleeds, doesn't auto-heal or the like. He does mend faster, is stronger and more resilient (though nothing impressively so in comparison to other nonhuman passengers). His body runs much hotter (like some of the werewolves), and while I haven't done any major testing, the current headcanon is that he can only be killed by magical weapons/means. He can still be put into a coma/death-like state if it's something that would be grievous death to a human. I just don't know what happens if someone chops off his head or something.
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns:
I'm guessing he'd give off both energies; perhaps more thalergy because of how much he's lived, in length, variety, and his now being a magical forest creature that's very intune with nature; thanergy due to his deaths.
He died towards the end of October, and that death was particularly bizarre/mythical as far as his body doing weird shit like bleeding liquid gold and ink, his skin turning to ash, and his chest crackin' itself open from the inside where it held a coin. I don't know if that would affect anything as far as how John experiences death.
Sweeney has the complicated situation of being Many-lived instead of just resurrected/reanimated. So he has incarnations who have died, but he wasn't brought back to life as him, just believed into someone new. In one case, that incarnation died multiple ways in different stories about him, so they're all 'technically' True. I have no idea how that sort of thing would interact with John's powers.

Any medical oddities of note: B has a high healing factor, though it feels artificial rather than natural. He has metal on his bones on his left side. He has died and been revived multiple times through medical means by HYDRA, and twice by the Barge/Admiral.
My character gives off thalergy (life energy), because of the regeneration from the serum.
no subject
Any medical oddities of note: Very normal human, a few scars. Has never died yet. Is technically about 6 weeks pregnant, but that's in a weird suspended state.
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns:
Was in proximity to a LOT of Death and death-related stuff, and has a high body-count herself.
My character gives off thalergy big time.
no subject
Any medical oddities of note: Hobbit. Has starved, is well recovered. Some burn scars to his feet, shins, and palms, also well recovered.
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns:
John is 100% free to recognize him as himself, make whatever jokes about the movies he likes, or talk about Sean Astin.
Sam is also injured, in a soul way. He manages and doesn't realize, and it won't shorten his life much, but the damage of the Ring was done and won't be undone.
My character gives off mostly thalergy, but the damage is a thin thread of the other stuff.

☠☠☠Yes, John can sense my character's energy when they've died recently and in general. I'm also interested in exploring these concepts or playing with his power.
Any medical oddities of note: has had a lot of injuries healed without leaving scars/marks despite being serious, has (sort of) died and then been remade many times because flexible biomass creation
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns: also he's a paradox and technically was never born which might register as something
Nathaniel
☠☠Yes, John can sense my character's energy when they've died recently and in general.
Any medical oddities of note: completely normal boy (ish)
Xie Lian
☠☠☠Yes, John can sense my character's energy when they've died recently and in general. I'm also interested in exploring these concepts or playing with his power.
Any medical oddities of note: immortal
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns: probably extremely strong life energy? I don't think Xie Lian has cells to die and regenerate or anything so I don't know how that would read (but am up for whatever might be interesting)
no subject
Any medical oddities of note: Tim has died here twice, Hunter and Eiffel both once. Eiffel also has the Dear Listener DNA in him, which I feel like gives him bonus thalergy as compared to a baseline human, and when he has the Decima virus in him he's got some bonus thanergy. Human+
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns: Tim would be a totally normal human, relatively speaking, though with the lingering Fear marks he might have some bonus thanergy, especially since he made the Statement/makes a point to remember his End marks. (Thanks to his first deal he no longer reads as Dead On Arrival).
god Hunter would probably read super fucking weird as a Grimwalker? Since he's literally a magical construct built around a dead man's bones and assorted magical ingredients. We could absolutely do shit with that.
Eiffel as above, otherwise baseline human. Izzy also, boring human, Dead On Arrival.
ARTHUR, however. Holy fuck. I'm not convinced he wouldn't have thanergy coming out the ASS thanks to having nearly died like three times already, being LITERALLY brought back from the dead by a wraith, and possessed by John. Probably his eyes, left hand and toes are completely fucked and weird and fully thanergised? but everything else is just waaaaay too much thanergy for a living dude.

☠☠☠Yes, John can sense my character's energy when they've died recently and in general. I'm also interested in exploring these concepts or playing with his power.
Any medical oddities of note: Wu Xie is mostly bog-standard human but he is also marked by his adventures in "exploring" tombs, graves, and deeply hidden labs in weird places built close to cursed areas of Asia. There is a sense of something hovering around him, a kind of limbo feeling, or status and also an echo of another person almost like he is a soul reborn. Outside of that, he's been living a hard life the past ten years, and while he is recovering from it, he does have traces of lung damage and nerve damage. There is also a rather weird piece of fossilized blood? something? somehow lodged in the center of his chest that is actively trying to repair damage and keeping away curses/bugs/ghosts but it's starting to dissolve from the excessive hard work.
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns:
Wu Xie is connected to something called The Ultimate/The Bronze Doors via his explorations, and most importantly to a piece of this item known as The Tree of Bronze, which he has actively been around, touched, messed with, and so on for a number of weeks. This "other" has marked him and while he is human, it clings to him. There is a possibility that he is also a person called 'Qi Yu' who is exactly like him but mysteriously vanished after a bad not good day OR he sent a part of himself back through time to become Qi Yu since they look, talk, think and act alike.
My character gives off thanergy because of all his tomb crawling and honestly? He is kinda in a status state back home since his throat had been slit and he was tossed off a cliff BUT it happened in subzero temps and he landed in a sea of flowers that holds living creatures in suspended animation.
Ye Zun
☠☠☠Yes, John can sense my character's energy when they've died recently and in general. I'm also interested in exploring these concepts or playing with his power.
Any medical oddities of note: He is not human but also human enough that anyone without special instruments and knowledge would not notice at first. He is also very very old but his body is only physically about four or five years old on a cellular level. His eyes are better at seeing in the dark, and he also can manipulate/control a form of energy called dark energy. Also because his ability is based off of consuming dark energy, he doesn't need to eat but constantly takes in energy and converts it for everything that he needs, however he is actively involved in the process.
He is also linked to his twin in some subtle way; their abilities are echoes of each other's and they tend to share powers, though Shen Wei is far less likely to kill via his power as Ye Zun. They are both considered being the strongest members of their race and have been frozen in time/made immortal by a set of Tools that are the results of alien technology, human invention and a good dose of spiritual/religious reworkings.
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns:
Dark energy isn't fully explained in the drama but it's very much a kind of energy that is either buried deep underground or in deep space. Ye Zun and his twin have abilities that span far more than the twins will likely ever tell anyone save those they completely trust.
For bookverse origins they are ghost kings and the energy is very much death but since we are using the drama mostly it's more of 'space/underground' energy. The twins were affected by the Tools around the age of 20-22 and it froze them in time. Ye Zun was actually separated from his physical form and shoved into a stone, where he was imprisoned until about fourish years ago (giving them about a year or so in canon plus the time on the Barge). He had to remake his body so parts of it are a bit off.Technically he is dead, but since he has graduated, he has been restored back to life.
My character gives off thanergy because it's the closest thing to all of the canon stuff.
no subject
Any medical oddities of note: I mean Dorian's fuckin' immortal. Dorian's over a hundred and fifty years old and has sustained wounds that should have killed him ten billion times by now.
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns: why are you not dead? everything about your energy reads 'you should be dead,' someone put Old Yeller here out of his misery.
My character gives off thalergy (life energy). Dorian is a big ol'cockroach and his powerset is based on solely survival.
Hilbert is a normalass man so while John can sense his energy, it's normalass man energy.
no subject
Any medical oddities of note: Undead vampire.
My character gives off thanergy (death energy) I'd imagine?
no subject
Any medical oddities of note: Nah unless being a lil bitch is a disease
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns: n/a hes just a guy
My character gives off thalergy (life energy).
no subject
Any medical oddities of note: Demon, and very old! He's probably immortal unless killed; I don't imagine he has any cell death going on. Has no need to breathe or have a beating heart, although he does both of those for the sake of appearances. He's essentially a shapeshifter, and his current body isn't his true form (said true form being basically an Eldritch abomination).
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns: Sebastian is Not Fond of necromancing. First off: way to take away from the beauty of death. Second: the kinda-sorta Big Bad in his canon is resurrecting a lot of people and it is a pain to deal with.
My character gives off only thalergy (life energy), most likely. Unless being around and causing a lot of death results in thanergy.
no subject
☠☠Yes, John can sense my character's energy when they've died recently and in general.
Any medical oddities of note: He's a radioactive ghoul so....

Any medical oddities of note: Oh just the whole "created from someone else's death and tragedy" thing and weird immortality issue
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns: Same as above??
My character gives off thalergy (life energy)

☠☠Yes, John can sense my character's energy when they've died recently and in general.
Any medical oddities of note: Nothing important
Just a regular human.
Henry
☠☠Yes, John can sense my character's energy when they've died recently and in general.
Any medical oddities of note: He was caught in a stasis even before the Barge, so things like sleeping and eating and surviving are a little easier for him. He can also heal faster than normal.
My character gives off thalergy (life energy)
no subject
Any medical oddities of note: Not really, but he'd probably still be able to pick up on the remnants of what happened to him on the Galley. I.E. loss of a hand, an eye, and being absolutely swiss-cheesed by bullets before suffocating/freezing to death in space. And his original death which landed him on the Barge, which was a very long and excruciating endeavor. He got clipped with a bullet and some shrapnel and died from a wound after it got infected/didn't heal properly.
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns: Not so far, open to whatever.
I guess he'd give off both, but maybe more of the Thanergy? Idk if his kill count would affect the type of energy he gives off, he's not 'outside' of the Barge by any means and is a very basic human dude, but he's killed a lot of people and has a darkness about him.
☠❤️☠Yes, John can use his power on my character's body/spirit.
Any notes?: IDK he might be curious what sort of upgrades he'd be able to get, he feels pretty powerless!
no subject
Any medical oddities of note: Kikimora is probably the only bipedal demon from the Boiling Isles, which are a living creature called the Titan. She also has a distinct 'coven' mark that resembles Hunter's energy in a way.
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns: N/a so far!
My character gives off thanergy (death energy)/thalergy (life energy)
Probably a mixture of both!
no subject
Any medical oddities of note: Probably nothing noticeable? He's been injured a lot and has quite a few scars, but that's not exactly unique on the Barge.
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns: Don't have anything right now. Will does have a tendency to be pretty reckless so I'm super-down for whatever injuries he's recently incurred to be noticed and/or commented on.
My character gives off both thanergy (death energy) and thalergy (life energy), probably more thalergy at the moment.
no subject
Any medical oddities of note: none
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns: she's had two NDEs that we know of, if that counts. She's certainly been face to face with corpses throughout life.
☠❤️☠Yes, John can use his power on my character's body/spirit.
Any notes?: none
forgot to do this ages ago, oops!
Any medical oddities of note: John can SORT OF sense his energy. Jedao should give off a little trace of thanergy, and specifically spirit magic thanergy, from the remnants of Jedao One's revenant soulglass that was implanted to form his mind. Basically, Jedao's mind was...grown, or flavored, from the leftover crumbs of a double-murdered & crystallized (very smart, very murdery, 400-year-old) ghost, after someone else took all the big chunks.
However, his entire body physically should read as a big ol [ERROR 404, Biology Not Found, Color out of Space Energy that is Neither Life nor Death!] Although he looks like he should have blood and lungs and stuff - he blushes, he hyperventilates, he eats - under the skin is just seething gatespace Not Of This World Stuff. So Jod's normal bioreading part would not work on him. I'm very down for it reading differently from "can't sense because partial nerfs" though - he can sense that there's SOMETHING that doesn't fit into his schema at all.
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns: I'm only partway through the series so idk if it makes sense for Jod to actually get the aesthetic impression of "the grit of broken glass that's hard to clean up" from his trace spirit thanergy, but if it does I'm all for it.

Any medical oddities of note: ↓
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns: At this time, Creeping Dust would emphatically not like John Gaius using magic on his person.
My character gives off thanergy (death energy).
Creeping Dust is not 100% alive. He has never died but he has undergone very rigorous
torturetraining to pull apart his attachments to his physical body. This allows him to become incorporeal, among some other stuff. He would normally add an additional layer of obfuscation by also retreating into the Parallel. Since he can't access any other planes on the Barge, he is distinctly more vulnerable and visible to those who can see such things. In this vein, Creeping Dust is also not 100% unmutated human. He has resonated with the Ghost Dog's essence and it has changed him. The Ghost Dog's energy is similarly something of an eternal unlife, not quite a living thing and not quite snatched by the jaws of death.
They give off a very... "the smoke and ashes from a censer" kind of vibe. Will slip through your fingers, intangible.
Ghost Dog is... one part Coyote, one part Hecate, one part Anubis? Hell-houndy. Trickster gody. Psychopompy. Transitional. Eternal. Blahblahblah?

Any medical oddities of note: vampires go brr
Ideas/Thoughts/Concerns: Astarion was extremely babey by elf standards when he died (39 out of a potential lifespan of 750ish); I have no idea if John could pick up on that but if he can, go for it!
My character gives off thanergy (death energy). If John gets a tiny hint of thalergy, it'll be because of the very alive slug-sized psychic parasite in his brain.
☠❤️☠Yes, John can use his power on my character's body/spirit.
Any notes?: Astarion is actively interested in necromantic shit as a possible option for Not Being A Fucking Vampire Anymore.

For Avalon (
chaos_drifter):☠☠Yes, John can sense my character's energy when they've died recently and in general.
Any medical oddities of note: Weird Passenger biology. They look like a human, but are basically a shadow demon.
They give off a weird mixture of both thanergy (death energy) and thalergy (life energy), since they’re literally neither alive nor dead.
For Ouni (
outside_world):☠☠Yes, John can sense my character's energy when they've died recently and in general.
Any medical oddities of note: None for now. If he gets his powers returned in full, that might change.
He gives off thalergy (life energy), and probably more than a regular human would.
